Sunita is 14yrs old. She lives in a village in Rajasthan with her parents and two younger brothers. Her village doesn’t have a college; only a school till class 12. Sunita cannot share all her thoughts and feelings with someone, so she writes about it in a diary. This is a page from Sunita’s diary.
When I am sitting alone I often think what would happen after a few years. Sometimes I feel l might not be allowed to study after Class 12. Neha madam keeps telling me that if I pay more attention to studies then I’ll be able to get a B.Com or B.A. degree. Sarla studies sincerely and always gets good grades. Her elder brother is already in college. So, her father might send her to college as well. Yesterday I was listening to mom and dad’s conversation. Dad was saying that he has started saving money for my wedding. Why can’t that money be used for my higher studies? My aunt came to visit us in the afternoon. She was saying, “Oh God! You are growing taller each day. It will be a tough task to find a boy for you to get married..’’ Why is it that my parents have to choose a man for me? Nobody bothers to ask me about my wishes.
