It is evening. The boys have reached home and are now playing a match.

Kishore and Sameer live in the same neighbourhood. Kishore lives in a basti (slum) adjoining the  20-storeyed apartment building in which Sameer lives. In fact, Kishore’s mother works in Sameer’s house. Sometimes, Kishore and Chhotu play cricket with Sameer and almost always beat his team at the game. There is a match going on right now. But today, they’re not sure who will win, for it’s been a tough match.

Suddenly, Kishore realizes that it is late; he has to start on his evening newspaper round. Sameer tries to persuade him to continue with the game, but Kishore tells him that though he too would like to keep playing, it’s impossible for him to wait any longer. Kishore explains that he won’t be paid if he doesn’t deliver the papers on time. As it is, there are so many expenses, his contribution is important for the family. The game breaks up.

Later that evening, Kishore, who’s still thinking about the match, hands over the day’s earnings to his mother. When she asks him why he’s looking upset, Kishore says, “I’m proud to be helping the family. But today I really wished I didn’t have to deliver newspapers. We were so sure of beating Sameer’s team, but we couldn’t finish the game because of me. Mumma, why do we have to be so poor?”

Sameer is equally upset about not finishing the game. As he tells his father, “We had a good chance of winning the cricket match today. But we had to stop the game because Kishore had to go to work. Daddy, why are they so poor?”
