Imagine you are Debaraj, from Odisha. You’ve got a job in Goa. Getting back home from work, you are walking down a street. Suddenly some people standing along the street start staring at you and call you names. You are wondering why are they doing this. You don’t understand their language so you don’t know what they are saying. You ignore and keep walking. You take the same route everyday and this behaviour continues. One day you tell them in a raised voice that you’ll register a police complaint if they don’t stop this. They lose their temper and start hitting and punching you. A person passing from the street comes to help you. The group of people shout something and run away from the street. The person takes you to the hospital. You ask him what those people were saying. He explains that they were commenting on your dark skin and different appearance. They were treating you as an ‘outsider’ because you didn’t speak their language and didn’t look like a local person. You are shocked to hear this.

What would you feel in this situation? Do you think that the behaviour of those people was justified?
