Eating habits, age, family history are some of the factors which can influence our blood pressure. If one or both the parents have high blood pressure, then the chances of the daughter/son having high BP increases. To keep our blood pressure normal, regular exercise and proper nutrition would be helpful.

High blood pressure can silently damage our body without showing any major symptoms. Symptoms, as we have discussed in the first unit, are the things we feel as “wrong” with our body when we are not well (for example feeling tired, heachache, fever, etc). You might recall that the root cause of the symptoms might be a disease. Since high BP may not show any symptoms, it is advised to get your BP checked regularly. Some doctors might check BP whenever you visit them. This is what we saw in Sunita’s story. Dr. Mahi checked her mother’s blood pressure even though they had only complained of cold and cough. High blood pressure, if left unidentified and untreated, can damage our heart and brain. It may result in other complications related to the heart or stroke also.

When we measure BP, we are measuring the pressure exerted by the heart when it contracts and when it relaxes. It is usually measured from the arm of the person. A doctor or the person checking the BP first puts on a cuff on the arm of the person and then applies a pressure on blood vessels using a small pump. The pressure is applied so much that no blood flows in the arm. This is because the vessels are so compressed that blood pumped through the heart is not able to flow through them. Then when they start reducing the pressure on the blood vessel, a pressure is reached when the blood starts to flow through the blood vessel during the contraction phase of the heart (this pressure is called the systolic pressure).

When the blood flows, a sound can be heard using stethoscope. The doctor can hear the sound using a stethoscope. This pressure reading is the higher reading. As we keep lowering the pressure, it finally reaches a pressure when blood flows continuously. Since it is a smooth flow, we stop hearing sounds. This is the diastolic pressure. This pressure reading is normally lower than the systolic pressure reading.

All BP measurement will give you two readings-one when the heart is pumping and the other when it is relaxed. It would be advisable to invite a health worker to your school to show you how these readings are taken and to discuss your doubts before the survey.
