StoryTime: The Science Fair Transcript: School bell rings. Setting:(This is in a corridor. School has just ended. Students are leaving. There is a buzz of students talking. Fela and the students meet in the corridor.) Sahir: Good evening sir, we were on our way to the staff room to meet you. Could you spare a few minutes please? Fela Sir: Yes of course. What is it ? Kanasu: Sir, can you tell us what we need to do to participate in the science fair? Fela Sir: First, choose a topic in Physics, Chemistry or Biology that interests you and find out more about it. Kanasu: Okay. After that? Fela Sir: Then you could make a model, say a plane or a machine or a volcano, using cardboard, clay, cans, plastic cups or anything you can find at home. Or you could use charts and drawings to explain your topic. Sahir: We are now studying plant life in our Biology class. May I study the way the crops are grown in my father's fields? Is that a good idea for a project? Fela Sir: That sounds like an excellent idea, Sahir. You could observe all the stages in growing a crop, right from sowing the seed to harvesting the crops. But, you should present it in a way that makes it interesting to all. Zo: Can we work on a project with a friend? Fela Sir: Yes you can. You can even work in small groups, if you like. Kanasu: Hmmm...I'd like to do something related to Physics. Could you help me choose a topic, Sir? Fela Sir: Of course! But why don't you think of one or two ideas first? Then we can see which one is better. Student 1: Where will the exhibition be held? Fela Sir: On this very ground. We'll put up stalls. You can display your projects and talk about them to friends, visitors and the judges. Do you have any more questions? (Some murmuring) Fela Sir: Okay then. I have to go now. If you have any more questions, you can ask me tomorrow. Zo/Kanasu/Sahir: Thank you, Sir! ( Zo, Kanasu and Sahir leave to go home.) Kanasu: Let's go home quickly. I want to think up some ideas for the project. Sahir: Oh! But I have to buy a few things from the stationery shop! Would you two mind coming with me? Kanasu/Zo: Sure. Zo: I need to buy a pen too. (Sound of footsteps - They are talking as they walk with their cycles to the stationery shop which is beside the school. The school is in the background as they walk away) Zo: Kanasu, do you think we can work together on a project? Kanasu: It is nice of you to suggest it, but I would like to work on my own. Thanks anyway, Zo. Zo (sighs): Alright. Sahir: You could work with me on my project, Zo. Why don't you come with me to see my father's fields this evening? Zo: Oh, I’d like that very much. (Sound of footsteps - They reach the stationery shop. Kanasu is a little behind, looking at things in the shop. Zo and Sahir are at the counter) Sahir: Excuse me, can I have a 200-page notebook, please? Shopkeeper: Sure. What size? Sahir: A small-sized notebook. Shopkeeper: Here it is. Is there anything else you need? Sahir: Yes. I would like a foot-ruler as well. (Noise of drawers being opened.) Shopkeeper: Oh, I'm afraid we have run out of rulers. Sahir: That's okay. Shopkeeper: That'll be fifteen rupees. Sahir: Here's a twenty-rupee note. May I have the change, please? Shopkeeper: Mmm… Please wait a minute. And you, young man, what do you want? Zo: I would like a pen, please. Shopkeeper: Will a blue pen do? We only have blue pens. Zo: Yes, thank you. Shopkeeper: That'll be five rupees. And please give me change. Zo: I don't have change. Sahir, do you mind paying for me? Sahir: Not at all. I will pay for you. Zo: Thanks, Sahir! Shopkeeper: That's great! Now I don't have to look for change. Would you like a bag? Sahir: No, thank you. I'll put them in my school bag. Kanasu, can I borrow a ruler from you? Kanasu: Sure, here you are. (Kanasu gives her ruler to Sahir) Kanasu: Don't forget to bring it to school tomorrow. I need it for the geometry lesson. Sahir: I won't forget. Zo: Okay, Sahir and Kanasu, see you later! Sahir/Kanasu: Bye! (Sound of cycling) -------------------------------------------------------------
