What is Science?

Grade:

8th

Subject:

Biological Sciences

Chapter:

1. What is Science?

Concepts:

  1. Steps of scientific method, What is a process skill in science?

  2. What are models and why are they used? - Observing and analyzing a variety of models, communicating ideas about models.

  3. Writing to communicate: taking down notes of the observations made and writing the steps will help the learners to describe their learning.

  4. Science and Society: Understanding the influence of science on society and vice versa, case studies of discoveries in science that benefited the society- for eg., discovery of vaccine, penicillin.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will be able to:

  1. List the steps of scientific methods which will help them plan and conduct a study.

  2. Point out the different steps of an experiment.

  3. Compare the different set-up of an experiment.

Activity 1:  [Suggested Time: 10 minutes]

Activity Instructions:

Think and Answer the following questions:

1. How do scientists answer a question or solve a problem they have identified?
2.
How do they conduct experiments, what are the steps they follow?

Activity 2: Process skill circus  [Suggested Time: 25 minutes]

Activity Instructions:

1. In the NetLogo Web resource, from 'Search the Models Library' section on the top, one can select the model (Virus or Rabbits Grass Weeds) that they want to observe using the dropdown button.
2. Manipulate with any 2 to 3 parameters in the experiment and note down the observations.
3. Discuss and Note down the steps that has resulted to this change.
4. Are these steps always be the same or can it be different?
5. Note down all your observations.
