Activity 1: Measuring the Diameter

You have guessed the approximate size and shape of the seeds. Next, let us discuss how we can measure the diameter of the mustard seeds? What instruments and pieces of equipment will you need for measuring? Discuss with your buddies and share your ideas with others.

After discussing, write these ideas in the space below:

Some observations:

As we have noted, all the seeds are not of the same shape and size. Some are flattened, some are round, some are big, others are smaller than others. If we try to measure the seeds across different sides (parts), we will see that they will not be of the same size.

So, we assume that the seeds are spherical and the diameter of the seeds is an estimate of its size.

Measuring the size of just one seed may not give us the correct answer. But if we measure many seeds together and take the average of these measurements, we will get a more accurate estimate. Let us see how we can do it.
