Like Pranjol, we often face situations when we feel wronged – situations that make us really angry but are beyond our power to change. Moreover such situations trigger off all kinds of negative emotions in us – like frustration, jealousy, humiliation, fear and irritation. It is therefore necessary to learn how to deal with these emotions and to find ways to manage and control situations of conflict differently. Here are some suggestions that may help you when you are upset or angry.
Count to Ten
The next time you are really upset or angry don’t immediately hit out and say the first thing that comes to mind. Instead take a deep breath, pause and count slowly to ten in your mind. This will stop you from saying or doing something that you may regret later. Try it and you will find that it works. When you calm down, you may be able to think of another way of handling the situation and achieving what you really want.
Leave it alone
Another trick is to get out of the fight. You can do this by actually leaving the place, by going away. Leaving the scene of conflict will help you calm down but you have to be very careful that this does not get interpreted as rudeness or insolent behaviour on your part. Another option is to mentally leave the conflict, that is, to not think or talk about the issue for a while. This will help you to cool down and think rationally. The issue that upset you may not seem as important anymore or you may be able to see things from another perspective. Passage of time can also help you to come up with different solutions to the problem or to find a compromise. Even if this does not help to solve the actual problem, it certainly won’t make the problem any worse !
