Average length of a step:

take out the average of the numbers given in the table (space to work out the average)

You call it the average number of steps you will take to cover the distance.

Look at this number and compare it with the numbers in the table.

 Are All the numbers are close to this number?

Now you have two predictive powers in your hands

One is the range and second is the average

Lets work out another value;

Divide the distance you walked on with the average step number

This the average length of your stride.

Test your predictive power

walk a much longer distance. Not very long though that you can not measure with your paper tape.
Count your steps to cove that distance. Multiply it with the average length of your stride.

You have got an approximate distance to the point.

Test your findings

you can use paper tape to measure the length that you just measured using your strides.
Compare these two numbers.

Are they close enough?

Now you you can count your steps to the school every day and write it in the table given at the inside cover. You can also work out the distance too by multiplying it with the average stride length.
