The story talks about the things we see all around us. We live in an unequal society. Some people are poor and some are rich. There are other inequalities also like caste and gender. There are far fewer girls and women who are educated or working in good jobs compared to boys and men.. The state of people from lower castes is generally much worse than people of higher castes- whether we look at income or health or other factors. . Why is there such a difference? It is NOT because rich people are smarter than poor people or work harder than them. It is NOT because men are superior in any way to women or one caste is superior to other in any way. It is simply because the SAME OPPORTUNITIES ARE NOT GIVEN TO BOTH GROUPS. A rich family passes on its wealth to their children, they are able to buy better education than a poor person; because of societal attitudes a boy gets far more opportunities than a girl; similarly a person from a higher caste is given more respect and opportunities, than a person from a lower caste. Is this fair? Shouldn’t everyone get equal opportunities?
If we have been lucky and gotten better opportunities in life, we should be grateful for the opportunity and make the best use of it. We should try and help those people who don’t have enough things and opportunities in life. Most importantly, we should challenge the thinking in society that allows such unequal treatment.
No matter how difficult our circumstances are, we should never lose hope. With hard work and dedication we can improve our lives. Read the story of Jyothi. Jyothi Reddy was earning a meagre 5 rupees a day working as a farmer. But when in the year 1998, Nehru Yuva Kendra set up a night school in her village, the course of her life changed. Since Jyothi was the only one in her village with a formal education, she was asked to volunteer at the centre. Her hard work and dedication did not go unnoticed, and she went higher and higher in the Kendra. She finished her higher studies and is now working as the CEO of Keys Software Solutions in the USA.
Jyothi’s story tells us that everything is possible if we are determined to achieve our goals.
