Does the medium move with sound?

Every medium consists of some tiny particles that vibrate when sound travels through the medium.
 

When sound goes from one place to another, do the particles of the medium also travel with it?

Consider the paper cup telephone activity, in which the vibrations are felt everywhere on the string. 

The string particles are at the same place but the vibrations travel.
